A Tribute to Ron Williamson

As Ron steps down from his role as Thornham Cricket Club Secretary, we reflect on the extraordinary contribution he has made to the club over more than 40 years. From the early days of six-a-side pub cricket to the thriving senior and junior teams of today, Ron has been a constant presence—player, secretary, mentor, and friend.

Ron’s kindness and generosity are legendary. Whether it’s welcoming visiting teams with a smile and a hot cuppa, manning the BBQ at summer events, serving his famous sausage rolls, or ensuring young players have everything they need at training, he has done it all with warmth, laughter, and a story to share. His dedication extends far beyond the pitch, making every club gathering, match, and event feel like a true community celebration.

As Stephen Bett, Chairman of the Club, says, “Without Ron, the cricket club would not be in the position it is in today. His very hard work and enthusiasm have been behind so much of what we’ve achieved. Being Chairman has been made easy by all his hard work, and I cannot thank him enough for all his efforts over many years.” His words capture the depth of gratitude felt across the club and the vital role Ron has played in its success.

Although he is stepping back from his formal secretary duties, we are incredibly grateful that Ron will continue to look after the square—a job he has carried out with unmatched pride and care—and we very much hope he will also keep his rightful place at the BBQ when summer rolls around. His presence in these roles is part of the fabric of club life, and we’re delighted that this connection continues.

As Ian Parkin says, “Whoever takes over from him will have some very big boots to fill,” and indeed, Ron’s influence will be felt long after he steps back from day-to-day duties. Vickie Rose now takes on the secretary role, and we celebrate Ron’s tireless efforts that have laid a foundation for her to continue building a thriving, inclusive club.

Ron has welcomed generations of players and families into Thornham Cricket Club and has shaped the club with heart, humour, and dedication. As Andy Arnold reminds us, “Every club needs a Ron.” Long may his spirit, support, and love of the game continue to inspire all who step onto the square.

Thank you, Ron, for everything. The pitch, the Pavilion, and the people you’ve touched are a testament to your remarkable service.
