Our History
For more than a century, Thornham’s community life was centred on the Old Drill Hall on Ringstead Road. Originally built for use by the Church Lads’ Brigade as a target range, the building later took on a more peaceful role. Following the Second World War it became a much-loved village space, hosting gatherings such as WI meetings, wedding receptions and other social events that brought people together.
By the early 21st century, however, it was clear that the Drill Hall could no longer meet the needs of a growing and changing community. A group of local volunteers and trustees came together with a shared vision: to create a modern, accessible facility that could serve Thornham for generations to come. A six-acre site was secured for community benefit, and work began with the creation of a multi-use games area, providing much-needed outdoor facilities alongside plans for a new Hall.
Following a sustained period of fundraising and planning, and with generous support from the National Lottery, King’s Lynn & West Norfolk Borough Council, Norfolk County Council and Norfolk Community Council, the new Thornham Village Hall opened its doors in 2013. The Hall was officially inaugurated the following year by Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II, marking a proud moment in the village’s history.
Today, Thornham Village Hall and Playing Field continues the long tradition of community use established by the old Drill Hall — evolving with the times, but remaining rooted in the same spirit of shared purpose and local involvement.
